Public Speaker, Yours Truly
I gave my first public speech for 2007 earlier this week. The speech is entitled, How to Have the Job You`ve Always Wanted. I spent the better part of December writing it -- tweaking it -- staring at it -- analyzing it -- and finally committing it to memory. It`s not easy to recite 25 minutes of material from memory -- I don`t know if you`ve ever tried it -- but better juice up those brain cells.
I haven`t memorized anything nearly that long in my life. But the results were worthwhile. I was able to stand before the crowd of 50 court reporting students and deliver everything as planned. The jokes landed well as did the serious content. I am pleased with their reaction but also learned quite a bit about what worked and what didn`t.
For one, I needed to have even more humor. I was actually worried that the thing would be too light if I included too much humor. But nothing could be further from the truth. It was the humor that saved the day. Thank God I had any in there at all. The serious stuff -- you know the real content -- made their eyes glaze over. So back to the word processor to lighten up the serious parts.
