What does the term 'O & 1' mean?

I've heard of this phrase, O & 1 (Oh and one) for awhile now during school.  What does it exactly mean?  Everyone seems to know except me.  Please help!

Does it refer to a score of some sort? As in, The Phillies are `0` (zero) and 1 so far in the series or She was 0 and 1 in the argument. Meaning, zero wins and one loss.
